According to ISTA, moisture content of a sample is the loss in weight of seeds when it is dried according to the prescribed method. It is expressed as the percentage of weight of the original sample. This test determines the moisture percentage in the seeds, at GGAS HI-Tech labs, we are operating with multiple state-of-the-art moisture analysis equipment utilizing both destructive and non-destructive methods.
Seed moisture is an important factor that affects viability, longevity in storage, and loss of vigor over time. Generally, lower seed moisture content means longer storability and better retention of germination potential and vigor.
PROTOCOL I: (Halogen Lamp)
- To perform this test according to ISTA guidelines, the working sample is evenly distributed over the surface of the container of pre-calibrated halogen-based moisture analyzer.
- Recommended seeds for each crop is spread evenly in the tray.
- The lid is closed and the procedure is set to “RUN”.
- The machine processes the sample to a certain level of heat for some time and record even t minute changes in seed weight and moisture %.
- The data is recorded and documented.
PROTOCOL I: (Dry oven)
- To perform this test according to ISTA guidelines, the working sample is evenly distributed over the surface of the container of pre-calibrated drying oven.
- The container is weighed before and after filling.
- Then the container is placed in the dry oven.
- The temperature and time prescribed for each crop from ISTA is set.
- At the end of the prescribed period, the container is covered and placed in desiccator to cool.
- After cooling, the container is weighed with its cover and content.
- The difference between the weight of container with samples before and after drying is the moisture content of that seed lot.
BENEFITS:
- By performing this test according to ISTA GUIDELINES in GGAS HI-TECH LAB, farmers can be guaranteed the best possible seed quality.
- Accurate and on-time seed moisture analysis can prevent seed spoilage by identifying and mitigating the risks associated with excess moisture, such as mold and fungal growth.
- Precise measurements of moisture content can help in taking accurate decision about the seeds storage in order to ensure the longer shelf life.
- Right decisions can be made about seed treatments and planting timing to optimize germination by knowing the moisture content of the seeds.
- Moreover, moisture testing supports sustainable agricultural practices by minimizing seed losses and maximizing resource efficiency.
