The climate of the planet earth has changed drastically in recent years due to human activities and industrialization. It has a great impact on farming and apparently, vegetables are not an exception. Vegetables are generally more sensitive to climate variability. Crop failures, yield reduction, quality deterioration, and increasing diseases and pest infestation are the major problems caused by climate variability. As many physiological processes and enzymatic activities are temperature-dependent, they are going to be largely affected.
To mitigate the adverse impact of climatic change on productivity and quality of vegetable crops we need to develop and adapt effective strategies like the development of production systems for improved water use efficiency adaptable to the hot and dry conditions and the crop management practices like mulching with crop residues and plastic mulches help in conserving soil moisture. Excessive soil moisture due to heavy rain becomes a major problem that can be overcome by growing crops on raised beds.
