According to ISTA, the main objective of the germination test is to determine the germination potential of a seed lot, which can be used to compare the quality of different lots and also estimate the field planting value. In order to monitor and assess the seeds’ capacity to germinate and grow into seedlings, this test involves placing seeds under carefully controlled environments. The significance of the germination test is apparent in a variety of media, including paper, sand, and soil.
PROTOCOL:
- To conduct a germination test according to ISTA, the germination media is first standardized for the tests i.e. sterilization and sieving to the proper recommended size etc.
- Specialized germination boxes are filled with moistened soil or sand, or wet papers.
- Pre-counted seeds are evenly distributed on the surface of the germination media.
- For soil and sand, seeds are covered with a thin layer of the respective media; for papers, covering with another moistened paper or folding method is utilized.
- The boxes are placed in a controlled environment with the temperature, humidity and light conditions optimum for the seeds, (GGAS is utilizing state of a art growth room and the latest technology artificial growth chambers)
- First count of germination is taken after 4 days and the final count is taken after 7 days.
- The germination percentage is calculated by dividing the number of seeds that have germinated by the total number of seeds sown, then multiplying by 100.
- A comprehensive report with the germination rates on each medium and any additional observations is produced and shared, keeping strict privacy.
BENEFITS:
- Performing this test according to ISTA GUIDELINES in GGAS HI-TECH LAB ensures that seed germination tests are performed according to internationally recognized standards, providing consistency and reliability in results.
- It helps seed companies and distributors comply with national and international regulations regarding seed quality and performance.
- It ensures that seeds sold to consumers are of high quality, which can build customer belief and confidence, thus ensuring high sales.
- Germination tests from GGAS HI-TECH LABS can facilitate seed certification and registration proposals, giving strong proof of high seed quality.
